Sip, Savor & Celebrate

Sip, Savor and Celebrate with your Spring and Summer entertaining guide from Michael Bray at Passion Vines in Somers Point, NJ.

Your Spring & Summer Entertaining Guide

There is something about the shift from April to May that changes everything. The air softens, the grill comes out of hibernation, and the dinner table migrates to the patio. Suddenly, the wines in your glass need to match the moment. Whether you are hosting a Memorial Day gathering, a lazy Sunday brunch, a backyard birthday, or a weeknight dinner that turns into a party, the right bottle makes all the difference. The good news? The wine world is overflowing with exciting options tailor-made for warm-weather entertaining — and many may surprise you.

Let me walk you through what is hot this season, what to pair it with, and where to find it.

The Whites Everyone Is Talking About

If there is one white wine trend dominating 2026, it is the rise of vibrant, food-friendly wines with a true “sense of place.” Leading that charge is Albariño.

From Spain’s coastal Rías Baixas region, Albariño has become one of the most talked-about whites — and for good reason. It is crisp and zesty with citrus and stone fruit, a natural salinity, and refreshing acidity that pairs beautifully with seafood and anything off the grill. Think shrimp, fish tacos, clams, or a simple seafood platter. It is, quite literally, a bottle of ocean breeze.

At Passion Vines, Bodegas Zárate Albariño ($26.99) has become a standout. As one of the benchmark estates of Rías Baixas, it delivers depth, personality, and exceptional value in every glass.

Close behind is Vermentino, a Mediterranean white that is bright, herbal, and subtly salty — everything a summer wine should be. For those looking for something more interesting than Pinot Grigio but just as easy-drinking, Vermentino is the answer. Bruni Plinio Vermentino ($16.99) from Tuscany’s Maremma coast consistently overdelivers. At that price, it is worth grabbing more than one bottle.

And do not count Chardonnay out. The heavy, over-oaked styles of the past are largely gone. Today’s best Chardonnays — especially from Sonoma, the Willamette Valley, and the Southern Hemisphere — are elegant, restrained, and highly food-friendly. They pair beautifully with creamy dishes, from spring risotto to lobster mac and cheese.

Rosé Is Not A Season — It's A Lifestyle

Rosé season is here, but the category has evolved. While pale Provence styles remain favorites, there is a growing demand for deeper, fuller-bodied rosés from southern France, Greece, and Spain. These wines offer more structure and complexity, pairing just as easily with grilled salmon or lamb as they do with a sunset gathering.

For entertaining, rosé remains one of the most versatile options. It bridges the gap between white and red wine drinkers and adds a visual elegance to any table. Stock a few styles and let guests explore — it often becomes part of the experience itself.

Reds For Warm Weather? Absolutely.

The idea that red wine does not belong in summer is a myth. The key is choosing wines with freshness and energy that complement bold, smoky flavors.

Zinfandel is a perfect example. With its generous fruit, warm spice, and balanced structure, it pairs effortlessly with barbecue favorites like ribs, pulled pork, and burgers. It is rich yet approachable — ideal for outdoor dining.

Saldo Special Select Zinfandel ($23.99) from The Prisoner Wine Company is a current favorite. With dark fruit, baking spice, and a touch of mocha, it delivers bold flavor while remaining smooth and balanced. At under $25, it is an outstanding value.

One simple tip: serve summer reds slightly chilled, around 60–62°F. Just 20 minutes in the fridge enhances freshness and makes the wine far more enjoyable on warm evenings.

Buy Better, Not More

One of the most encouraging shifts in wine culture today is simple: drink less, but drink better. Instead of reaching for multiple bottles of the same label, more people are choosing wines with character and a story to tell — and sharing them with intention.

That philosophy has always guided us at Passion Vines. Whether you spend $17 or $70, every bottle should earn its place at your table.

Stop into our Somers Point or EHT locations this season and let us help you build your summer lineup. Tell us what you are cooking, who you are hosting, and what you love — and we will take it from there. Because the best pairing is still great wine, great food, and great company.

Cheers to a beautiful season ahead.
