Summer Salt

Some restaurants capture a moment. Summer Salt captures a season.

What a greeting

Where Coastal Calm Meets Culinary Craft in Avalon

Recently, my cousin Beverly invited me to dinner at one of her new favorite restaurants, Summer Salt in Avalon. I hadn't heard much about it, which surprised me. Maybe it had crossed my radar and simply didn't register. After all, I've eaten my way through South Jersey many times over—first as a photographer and now as a publisher—so finding a restaurant that feels genuinely new to me is always a welcome surprise.

Tucked along the 2800 block of the Boardwalk in Avalon, Summer Salt doesn't shout for attention. In fact, I noticed the neighboring arcade before I noticed the restaurant itself. Its modest façade and signature blackboard give little indication of the experience waiting inside. And perhaps that's part of its charm.

A Menu Built Around the Season

Our menu, "Revel," July 22–August 17, was a four-course prix fixe built around the flavors of midsummer. It's plant-forward, seafood-driven and rooted in the seasonal ingredients of Cape May County. The menu feels carefully considered without feeling overly complicated.

The four-course prix fixe format allows the kitchen to tell its story gradually, beginning with a series of smaller tastes before moving into the main course and dessert.

The evening started with Bell Pepper with gremolata, parmesan and panko; Potato with smoked paprika aioli; and a clever PLT made with prosciutto, iceberg lettuce and tomato.

Each was small but expressive. The bell pepper was bright and crunchy, the potato offered a smoky bit of comfort, and the PLT was a playful take on a familiar classic.

The next round leaned even more heavily into summer.

Peach Burrata paired creamy burrata with corn and basil, while the Corn Fritter with bell pepper beurre monté brought a little richness to the table. Watermelon with cucumber, mint and Aleppo pepper was cool, refreshing and just spicy enough to reset the palate.

This was summer distilled onto a plate—peaches, corn, watermelon and herbs, all arriving when they're supposed to.

All of those tastes eventually lead to a choice of entrée. I chose the Pork Chop with polenta and blistered tomato, while Beverly went with the Scallops with napa slaw, corn and peach.

The pork chop was rustic and satisfying without being unnecessarily heavy. The scallops brought together sweet, crisp and briny flavors that seemed perfectly suited to the setting.

Another thing Summer Salt gets right: the pacing. As a businessperson first and an artist second, I couldn't help notice how the prix-fixe format allows the restaurant to operate with a certain rhythm. The kitchen knows where the evening is going, the staff can guide diners through the experience, and everything seems to flow more naturally.

That efficiency doesn't make the experience feel restrictive. Quite the opposite—it makes it feel more relaxed.

And the setting certainly doesn't hurt.

Looking out toward the dunes and beach as the evening unfolded gave dinner an almost surreal quality. I've eaten at plenty of expensive restaurants, including some that seem to build their reputation around how difficult it is to get a reservation. Summer Salt felt different. There was less hype and more thoughtfulness.

Dessert followed the same philosophy.

The Raspberry Roulade with meringue and mascarpone was light and airy, while the Chocolate Custard with toffee and Maldon salt offered something richer and more indulgent.

Neither felt excessive. After four courses, that's important. You leave satisfied rather than overwhelmed—and still perfectly capable of taking a walk along the boardwalk afterward. Summer Salt isn't trying to be the flashiest restaurant at the Shore. Its appeal is subtler than that.

The food is seasonal without chasing trends, refined without becoming pretentious, and creative without losing sight of what makes summer dining at the Jersey Shore special in the first place.

After dining out in so many places, it's refreshing to find a restaurant that can still catch me by surprise. Thanks to Cousin Beverly, Summer Salt is no longer in my blind spot.

And I suspect I'll be back and I hope you will give it a try and let me know what you think. They are open for one more month offering their Savor Menu from August 19th - September 20th. Check out the link below for that menu.
