Imagine two handprints, stretched out with fingers wide apart, and pressed onto the land. That’s what the Finger Lakes in upstate New York look like from an aerial view. Although there are 11 lakes in all, Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, and Keuka Lake have become synonymous with vineyards and wine tours located amidst stunning scenery.
The cool, crisp air makes for a perfect microclimate for white wines like Riesling and Gewurztraminer, as well as reds including Cabernet Franc and Merlot. In addition, the area is also known for its ice wines — a dessert wine made from grapes picked frozen right off the vine. Winter be damned for Finger Lakes wine!
Regardless of your wine preferences, this scenic and quaint part of New York state offers a whopping 120 award-winning wineries across the region. So, let’s cleanse our palates, savor the bouquet, and take a sip (or two) of Finger Lakes wine options.

A Tale Of Three Trails
The Seneca Lake Wine Trail, located in the heart of Finger Lakes Wine Country, boasts more than two dozen award-winning member wineries offering over 600 wine varieties. According to Food & Wine magazine, Atwater Vineyard and Winery is an ideal option for ice wine as well as Pinot Gris — all wines paired with locally-sourced cheese and a charcuterie board. Another Food & Wine favorite is the Barnstormer Winery — a beautifully restored 170-year-old farmhouse. Enjoy their comprehensive fireside tastings of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Franc, and other reds.
Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, the longest-running wine trail in America, offers many world-class wineries. For example, Montezuma Winery is known for award-winning wines ranging from dry to sweet — and they also make homemade fudge for the chocolate lover in your group. Another Cayuga option is the Swedish Hill Winery — 80 acres of vineyards and a tasting room with more than 50 unique wines to try as a tasting flight or to enjoy by the glass on their indoor or outdoor decks.
With six member wineries available, Keuka Lake Wine Trail strives to deliver “an unforgettable experience blending history, wine, and warm hospitality.” For example, Heron Hill Winery prides itself in practicing sustainable viticulture, including seven different styles of Riesling.
In addition, wineries along the Keuka Trail offer signature events throughout the year. In November, the Handcrafted Holiday program includes owner/winemaker-led tastings, behind-the-scenes discussions, vertical tastings (same producer but different vintages), unreleased wines, and more.
Getting Around
The Finger Lakes wineries span five counties and run for over 3,000 square miles. An easy and convenient way to get around the Finger Lakes is by car (your own or rental). If you don’t like the idea of driving after too many tastings, several tour operators offer private options. For example, Wine Wagen Tours takes up to six passengers to any of the 120 wineries in the area. Based on your wine tastes and preferences, the Wine Wagen will drive you to the place or places you want to visit, allowing about 45 minutes per winery.
Another option, Finger Lakes Limo, offers luxury sedans, vans, limousines, and bus options. Planning a romantic weekend or a bachelorette party? You can easily experience the vineyards with a chauffeured service. Whether you select a six or eight-hour package, travel in style and safely to and from vineyards located on the Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, and Keuka Lake trails.
Where To Stay
From lodges to resorts, the Finger Lakes overflow with options for every taste and budget. If you are into glamping and nature, Firelight Camps offers luxury safari tents with a private balcony overlooking stunning views. For a less rustic stay, La Tourelle Hotel & Spa not only has beautiful rooms with views, but a full-service spa as well, with services like deep tissue massages and facials.
Another option for pampering yourself during your Finger Lakes vacation is The Lake House on Canandaigua — “impeccably designed” rooms with lake views, private balconies, and an artisan café. In addition, the hotel offers a full-service spa with a heated lakefront pool, oversized hot tub, and fire pits.
Wine Tasting Passport
A great way to experience the Finger Lakes Wine Trails is by purchasing a digital wine tasting passport. When visiting a participating winery, just use your phone to redeem special deals for tastings, food, and other discounts.
